Flow Chart-01.png

SKILL VS. CHALLENGE

Flow takes place where a perceived challenge and one's perceived skills come together. The greater the two, the greater the intensity of flow.

Flow is often known by other names such as:

"IN THE ZONE"

"RUNNER'S HIGH"

"IN THE POCKET"

These phenomena AREN'T simply MYSTERIES. THEY can be unlocked by studying the brain.

Achieving Flow regularly can increase productivity, fulfillment, and creativity.

"Control of consciousness determines the quality of life.

– Mihalyi Czikszentmihalyi, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience

productivity

According to studies, flow can even affect your productivity in areas unrelated to your flow activity as much as one day from achieving flow. Your flow activity could actually help your achieve more during the work day.

FULFILLMENT

Flow is intrinsically rewarding and even addicting, often leading to a heightened state of euphoria. More on that below.

CREATIVITY

During flow thinking becomes more lateral, allowing you to make connections that would normally never arise. This can lead to anything from scientific breakthroughs to deeper knowledge of oneself.

"I AM A BRAIN, WATSON. THE REST OF ME IS A MERE APPENDAGE."

Prefrontal Cortex-01.png

PREFRONTAL CORTEX

The prefrontal cortex is in charge of time management, complex decision making, our sense of self, and our inner critic. During flow this area becomes less active, allowing us to escape inhibitions, self-doubt, and time. This sensation is what adrenaline-junkies crave.

THE FLOW CYCLE

EEG machines allow us to study brainwaves by placing many tiny sensors on the head. This device is the the key to understanding flow and its cycles. Wash, rinse, dry, repeat.

struggle

BETA waves. Will you take the leap or back down? At this stage your body floods with adrenaline.

RELEASE

ALPHA waves. You let go of your inhibitions and set in for the long haul. Your body flushes the adrenaline out of your system with nitrous oxide, and you begin to relax. Dopamine (the "feel-good" hormone) is released, urging you to keep going.

FLOW

THETA waves. You made it. Your mind is now at ease and you simply know what to do. Your body releases Serotonin, anandamide, and several endorphins.

RECOVERY

DELTA waves. Flow can be very taxing on the mind, so it needs some time to rest and solidify the connections that your brain just made. This stage is less than pleasant, but necessary for the process.

FOCUS TUNING

Many of the most successful people in the world use rituals and patterns to help them focus on and prepare for the task at hand. Whether it be before shooting a free-throw, giving a presentation, or painting your masterpiece, beginning a task with a ritual can help you into a state of flow. At this stage in the process, distractions are minimized, goals are set, setting an alarm helps you let go of time, and focus tuning preps your mind to focus intensely.

Flo keeps track of your brain activity through your entire session. You can see it in real-time if you are having trouble focusing on your task. Once you are in flow state, however, you won't need to see the data. Flo will also wait to give you helpful feedback and advice until after you finish.

MUSIC TUNING

LIGHT TUNING

This is where Flo takes things to the next level. As you become more focused, it adapts your environment to help smoothly bring you into flow. This could be many things including locking doors and changing lighting, but for now Flo focuses on music tuning. It works with iTunes or Spotify to play songs from your music at just the right time based on your brain frequencies. This helps ease you into flow state.

When it's time to finish up, Flo gently brings you back from flow with some more distracting music. An overview of the session helps you evaluate your activity and level of focus. Flo also offers you helpful tips on how to improve your focus, helping you to plan for the next session.
